E. Medical Surveillance
Laboratory employees who suspect they have been overexposed, or are having symptoms consistent with overexposure to a hazardous chemical, will be provided, at a reasonable time and place and without cost to the employee, medical examinations and consultations conducted by or under direct supervision of a licensed physician. ( Reference - Lab Safety Manual Appendix A.
Employers must provide employees an opportunity to receive medical services if:
- An employee develops signs or symptoms associated with exposure to a hazardous chemical.
- Monitoring reveals an exposure level routinely above regulated levels.
- A spill, leak, or explosion in a work area results in the likelihood of exposure.
Medical consultation, exams and surveillance which may be required under the standard will be coordinated through Environmental Health & Safety and the Benifit & Payroll Services Department. Referrals will be made, when indicated, to an occupational medicine clinic.
PERSONNEL INVOLVED IN ANY EMERGENCY SITUATION SHOULD GO DIRECTLY TO THE NEAREST EMERGENCY ROOM OR CALL 911 FOR ASSISTANCE.
If a question arises about the need to provide medical consultation or examination because of a non-life threatening spill, leak, or explosion or if a concern regarding monitoring arises because of such a spill, leak or explosion, call Environmental Health & Safety at 335-3041.
Questions regarding medical concerns related to this standard should be directed to the WSU Laboratory Safety Officer at 335-3041.
