Section 2 M

M. Material Safety Data Sheets and Other References

  1. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) are documents provided by manufacturers describing the physical and health hazards of hazardous chemicals and tradename products and must be accessible to all employees on all work shifts. Laboratories must keep on file any MSDS received with incoming shipments of hazardous chemicals. ( Reference - Appendix A and SPPM S80.60 Chemical Hazard Communication Program).

It is strongly recommended that a person or persons be designated as responsible for obtaining and maintaining MSDSs for hazardous chemicals used in the laboratory. This person would ensure that MSDSs are available to all laboratory employees, and would obtain MSDSs for laboratory chemicals for which none are present.

  2. MSDSs are available through Maintenance Services for Campus Life (335-1541) or Environmental Health & Safety (335-3041) upon request. (open the pdf version at bottom of page to fill out on line or open Word Version of Form to fill out and save both data and form electronically.)
3. Describe how and where MSDS’s and other references are available in this laboratory (see Appendix G for a list of laboratory safety references). Identify the person responsible for obtaining and maintaining the MSDS’s for hazardous chemicals used in the laboratory.
