7. Recommended Laboratory Spill Kit

Laboratory spill kits should contain items of the proper diversity and size to meet policy demands of the department or laboratory. If the policy of the department and/or laboratory is that each laboratory will contain spill cleanup materials, it is recommended that each laboratory contain the items listed below. If the policy of the department and/or laboratory is to used spill cleanup materials from a cart or a fixed storage area not present in the laboratory, contact Environmental Health & Safety for recommendations for cart or storage area contents.

The intent, in making the following list of recommended items, is that 911 will be called if listed materials are insufficient to manage the spill easily and effectively. Note that a "Chemical Spill Treatment Kit" and "Spill Treatment Kit Accessories", containing all the following items except the one-gallon plastic waste container, can be purchased as a package.

It is expected that each employee required to clean up a hazardous chemical spill or release will be properly trained to perform such duties (see Section II.I for training requirements). A written plan should be made available to employees which provides the necessary information for safe spill management. An individual lab supervisor (or PI) who is knowledgeable about chemical spill management practices and about the hazards of chemicals used in the specific laboratory, should be designated as responsible to ensure that employees are properly trained prior to cleaning up released material. This designated person should also serve as a reference resource during spill cleanup activities.

Recommended Laboratory Spill Kit Items

1. Neutralizing Agents - choose depending on materials used by laboratory
   • one 2.5 lb. container of SPILL-X-A@ acid spill neutralizer*
   • one 2.0 lb. container of SPILL-X-C@ caustic spill neutralizer*
   • one 1.85 lb. container of SPILL-X-FP@ formaldehyde spill neutralizer*
   • one 1.0 lb. container of SPILL-X-S@ solvent spill neutralizer*
