Employees and students who work in laboratories in the Washington State University system are a highly valued resource. Health and safety measures are of great importance in maintaining productivity and enhancing the working and teaching environment in University laboratories. Special precautions and work practices, as well as effective ventilation and contamination control systems are often necessary to assure the safety of researchers, laboratory technicians, students and visitors associated with WSU. This chemical hygiene plan has been compiled as an aid in promoting a high standard of health and safety in University laboratories.
The chemical hygiene plan, in the form of a lab safety manual, was created for the purpose of providing valuable and accessable information to all personnel working in University laboratories. However, each laboratory is unique in purpose and function, so in its present state the manual is incomplete, lacking laboratory-specific details which only the laboratory leader can provide. To facilitate the addition of needed details, eight informational pages (colored yellow for ease of access) remain to be completed by the principle investigator or laboratory supervisor responsible for laboratory specific processes. Once those details are provided and recorded in the manual, regulatory compliance as mandated in the Washington State Standard entitled "Occupational Exposures to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories" will be achieved.
The cooperation of each laboratory worker and student is enlisted in this effort. Such cooperation is fundamental in providing a safe laboratory environment for all.
