WSU's Environmental Management System & Sustainability Initiative

WSU’s Environmental Management System

Washington State University is committed to continually improve its environmental performance through its Environmental Management System. An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a set of processes and practices that incorporate environmental care throughout the organizational structure that enables a reduction in environmental impacts and an increase in operating efficiency. For a detailed look at WSU’s nationally-recognized EMS, please go to

WSU’s Sustainability Initiative
“Living and governing for the future demands that we look at the complex problems of water, energy, growth management, community, and economic development from a system-wide approach—examining how they are connected and integrated.”

Governor Gary Locke

Washington State University seeks to provide an exemplary teaching, research, and outreach environment that fosters the conservation of natural resources, supports and enhances social responsibility, addresses community and economic development, and follows environmental, social, and economic practices.

With the approval of Executive Policy #24 on November 15, 2005, WSU is committed to improve its performance in sustainability in all areas of operations to meet the needs of current generations without impairing the ability to meet the needs of future generations. This policy will help WSU meet its responsibility to prepare students, staff, and faculty to proactively deal with the environmental, social, and economic challenges facing humanity.
