Battery Recycling

What should I do with my used batteries??
Batteries should be recycled rather than thrown away. WSU's Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) program accepts, at no charge, all types of batteries (including alkaline, lead acid, nickel cadmium, lithium and mercury). The batteries are recycled to recover the heavy metals and other hazardous components. If you have batteries from university equipment or departments, EH&S will pick the batteries up from your lab, office, or work area. Place batteries in a sealed container or box and affix a label that reads "Universal Waste Batteries, Start Date: XX/YY/ZZ" and give the date the first battery was placed in the container, as shown below.
To arrange collection by EH&S, just fill out a Chemical Collection Request form (CCR) on-line at www.ehs.wsu.edu/ccr/ccr.asp. Alternatively, paper copies of the CCR form are available from
Central Stores, catalog # 47860. Send the completed copy to EH&S
at campus zip 1172.
Various battery types (except lead-acid) may be placed together in one container. Many departments have established a central container in which to collect batteries without having to complete a CCR. Some buildings have a centralized waste accumulation area where batteries can be dropped off without completing a CCR.
Batteries from home or personal equipment may be recycled locally. The Whitman County Landfill and Moscow Recycling both take some household batteries for recycling. Moscow Recycling will accept car batteries as well. For further information and drop off locations, contact:
Whitman County Landfill: 334-2400
If you have any further questions regarding battery recycling, please call 335-3041 and ask about battery recycling.
