Hazard Assessment

Hazard assessments are part of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) program requirements at WSU. The PPE rule states that the employer (principal investigator, instructor, or laboratory supervisor) must assess physical and chemical hazards to which lab employees may be exposed. Then, based on the hazard assessment, a determination is made as to whether PPE is required, and if required, the exact kind of PPE needed to protect the employee. Finally, the employee is trained to properly use the PPE. A written record must be kept of the hazard assessment and the employee training for PPE use.

OHS has developed general guidelines for non-laboratory units to conduct and certify PPE hazard assessments and training. You can download the guidelines and certification forms, or consult the WSU Lab Safety Manual Section IV Certification Of Hazard Assessment. Personal Protective Equipment Hazard Assessment and Certification Guidelines are also available offline from EH&S at 335-3041 or by email at ehs@wsu.edu.
