About the Association

Northwest Laboratory Hazardous Waste Association

The Northwest Laboratory Hazardous Waste Association was founded in 1985 by hazardous waste program managers at several of the region's higher education institutions. The Association was intended to be a forum for exchanging information pertaining to the unique problems associated with managing hazardous waste generated in laboratories. Since 1985 the Association has grown to include members from public and private colleges and universities, public and private laboratories, health care organizations, biotechnology firms, and other organizations.

As the experience and expertise of the membership has increased, the nature of the Association conferences has changed. In the early days a few knowledgeable members provided the majority of the information in panel discussion and formal presentation formats. Now a wide variety of members bring real world experience and knowledge to in-depth round table discussions as well as the more traditional presentation formats. Often the host institution will arrange to provide tours of their waste management facilities.

Anyone who is involved in the management of chemical waste from a laboratory setting is encouraged to attend one of the Spring or Fall conferences. The conferences are generally one day in length and rotate between the Puget Sound, eastern Washington, and Portland areas.
